The word polyurea is derived from the Greek word πολυ--poly- means "many"; ουρίας-oûron means "urine" (referring to the urea found in the urine). Urea is an organic compound with the chemical formula (NH2)2CO. This molecule has two amine groups (–NH2) connected by a carbonyl functional group (C=O). In polyureas, alternating monomer units of isocyanate and amine react with each other to form urea bonds. Urea is formed by the reaction of isocyanate and water to form a carbamate intermediate. The acid decomposes rapidly by decomposing carbon dioxide and leaving amines behind. The amine then reacts with another isocyanate group to form a polyurea bond. The reaction of these two steps is used to prepare a material commonly referred to as polyurethane foam.
Polyurea is an elastomer which is a reaction product derived from an isocyanate component and a synthetic resin blend component through stepwise growth polymerization. Isocyanates can be aromatic or aliphatic in nature. It can be a monomer, polymer, isocyanate, quasi-prepolymer or any variant reaction of prepolymer. The prepolymer or quasi-prepolymer may be made of amine-terminated polymer resin or hydroxyl-terminated polymer resin.
